Soccer Team

Soccer, football in Uganda, is a favorite sport among most of our boys. Many of their breaks are spent on the field or kicking a ball around the orphanage. They not only play because they love it, but many of them are good at it too.

In fact, one of our teams has gone on to the district level in soccer. This is a great accomplishment for our boys and exciting news for us.

We also are proud to announce that two of our secondary students have entered the National Soccer League. They are Michael Kiyimba and Brian Mukwaya. Congratulations boys!

It has been really neat for me to see the picture of our boys playing soccer. I am honored that they have been provided soccer uniforms and get to compete against one another. We desire for them to have shoes now too so we are trying to brain storm some ideas of how to get shoes their way. We have been looking into hosting a benefit soccer tournament or possibly getting donated gently used shoes. What a blessing it would be for our boys to have shoes to go with their uniforms.

Anna Phillip's Girls Kick It! Program

I just read this article on the Washington Times website. It is about a young lady, Anna Phillips, who has greated a program in Uganda called "Girls Kick It!" that uses commitment to her favorite sport, soccer, as a life changing experience to help girls and women of Uganda turn their lives around. Ms. Phillips describes the theory behind this organization, "We have found when girls have a commitment at an early age, it is less likely they will marry young or get pregnant or contract HIV."

The girls and women in the program practice three to five days per week and attend life training classes that discuss pertinent issues like self-respect, prevention of AIDS, and importance of teamwork. In America, these traits are taken for granted. In Uganda, a woman with this knowledge is a rare gem. In Uganda, women without guidance and hope are often subject to young marriages, starvation, poverty, and more. Programs like Girls Kick It! strive to break this cycle by reinforcing positive and strong characteristics of the women of Uganda.
