College Students Raise Awareness of Situations in Uganda

LeHigh University has just welcomed a new club to campus, Schools 4 Schools. Schools 4 Schools, run by young volunteers, is putting on an event to raise awareness of the rough conditions that people in Uganda face, including hunger, displacement, and general financial hardship. The event will include simulations, a movie, personal stories, and information on how students can get involved.

I just thought this was a great example of how anyone can make a difference, just by committing themselves to become advocates of a cause. Church of Uganda gives relief food

The Church of Uganda has donated food to the sum of sh145 million! About 2000 hunger stricken families are to benefit from this donation.

Toothbrush Donation!!

We are so excited. We had a donation of approximately 2000 toothbrushes! Now we are ready to send them to Uganda. This is exciting news. Although toothbrushes are taken for granted in American, dental hygeine is a little more difficult in Uganda. This will help our children keep up their teeth, which in turn will help them stay healthier. After all, everything you eat comes in through your mouth! Our children are no different! Plus, a clean smile makes a great impression, and our children will be better able to get jobs and make business relationships if they can greet all they meet with a clean smile and nice teeth!

More great news for education!

Here at Christian Life Ministries, we not only try to help today's orphans, but we also strive to help future generations not have such a problem with the number of orphans. We do this many ways, including HIV/AIDS prevention and general education programs. I personally beleive that if Uganda's society was better educated, it would help the whole country as a whole and its relationship with other parts of the world. Educated children are usually more confident, aware of the possibilities, and more able to learn skills quickly. This is why I am so excited lately about the growth of Uganda's educational system as well as the evidence that Ugandas are learning more and yearning to learn as much as they can!

Sugar makes power?!

A sugar plant in Uganda has found a great use for the sugary liquid biproduct that is usually thrown out. It has been found that the biproduct can be use to produce power. They sell it to the national grid, making the power source for Uganda more reliable (in the past, there hasn't been enough power to support the growth of Uganda's industries, so Ugandans often have power shortages and outages).

It is amazing how God uses every little thing on earth for a purpose and gives us the wisdom to figure out how to use it to our advantage!

Motorcycle Race Company Donates to Uganda School

GP2 Series, a motorcycle race series, has given a significant donation to the St. Mary's Primary School in Seeta. The school was too small to house all of the potential students, which was unfortunate considering how much difference and education can make to a Ugandan child. The GP2 Series donated to build a new wing, provide books and furniture, and even maintain the existing school.

This company deserves great thanks for this donation. Please pray that God bring more generous souls to help Uganda.

Busy Week!

I have a busy week this week! Today and tomorrow I am speaking with pastors local to the Dallas Fort Worth area for the most part. I hope to gain more sponsorships for our children! We have 1000 children that we need to keep sponsored. I have been doing many things to keep from being financially obligated to send the children away from our orphan village and to... nowhere. So, if you happen to know of a church that may be interested in helping us get sponsored, please let me know!!

Please pray that these meetings go well, and that God's will is furthered through the talks.

Meet Betty

Meet Betty Nalukwago

Betty is an orphan, who came to our village as the whereabouts of her family is unknown. It is very likely that her parents were killed or they both died of AIDS, as this is the most common thread with the children that come to our village. She was hungry, needing clean clothing and a roof over her head Betty had nobody to love her and teach her. School most definitely was not an option for Betty as there are fees to attend school. Her future looked bleak, until now!

Under “Christian Life Ministries” “Homes for the orphans” project, Betty was chosen to come to one of the orphan home villages where there are other orphans from similar backgrounds that live together as a large family. Each home, which houses 12 children, has a widow or single woman that raises the children up in a loving, Christian family home.

Betty has had a tough time already in her young life. She is adjusting well to her new life, she loves reading. She says, "I thank God for my new family, brothers and sisters”. Her prayer request is for all her relatives to accept Jesus in their life. Because of you her prayers are being answered and she is able to live in a Christian community that will meet her needs.

Consider becoming Betty's sponsor so that we can continue to care for her and so that she can have hope in humanity when receiving love from you!

Libraries in Lira

LIRA district LC5 chairman Franco Ojur has appealed to the government to establish village libraries and adult learning facilities to enhance literacy among villagers. This is great news. As most of you know, one of our orphan villages is located in Lira. I am proud that this village is now finding priority in education.

Uganda GDP

I am no economics expert, but I know a few things. The GDP of Uganda is expected to grow by 6 percent in 2009/2010, making Uganda one of the fastest growing economies in the Sub Sahara Africa. It is nice to see landmarks like that that suggest Uganda has a positive future. Of course, we have a long way to go on the socioeconomical sector, but it is nice to see progress for this struggling nation.

Solar Cell Phones in Uganda

Uganda Telecom recently released their latest innovation, a solar charged cellular phone. The new phone overcomes challenges that this technology faces: lack of electricity. Most cellular phone users do not easily have access to power to charge their phone. Since it is not convenient, cell phones have not taken off in Uganda like they have elsewhere in the world. This new technology allows cell phones to be used in even the poorest of villages. One hour of sunlight can charge the phone for 12 hours of talk time. The phones can be charge by solar power or with a traditional power outlet. Of course, we have a long way to go before Uganda fully enters the digital age, but this is a good start and can pave the way for other inventions.

I laugh at the thought of all of our orphans running around with cellular phones someday! Just kidding!

This Weekend in Saratoga Springs

In case you are in that area, there is an event in Saratoga Springs in which Ugandan children will be performing music and dance from Africa. This event is not put on by Christian Life Ministries. It benefits Action for Empowerment, an organization devoted to providing education for orphans that lost both parents to AIDS.

Mountain Lakes woman builds school in Uganda

Cindy Garrison, a young philanthropist, is making her mark on Uganda by building a secondary school in Namayumba, Uganda, an impoverished village. Garrison first visited a neighboring town for a mission trip and realized that something was missing. There was no secondary school (equivalent to a U.S. high school) for children to attend after completing primary school. So, she became committed to fulfilling this need for the Ugandan children. She raised money by advocating for the cause. She connected with many people, including the Christian Drama School. The Christian Drama School helped her raise money by creating a DVD. The DVD was produced and sold, with proceeds from each going towards this new secondary school in Namayumba. To date, the school now has a completed foundation, and construction continues. How exciting that a seemingly insignificant individual can make such a difference! What difference could you make?

We need your help!

After news that the private school that is currently educating our children has drastically raised the tuition fee, we are now seeking donations to build a semi-permanent school in which we will educate our children next term, which starts next week!

This will enable us to hire all-Christian teachers that can teach both the basics of math, reading, science, and history, but also how to apply them in becoming a Christian leader for future Uganda.

We are excited and challenged by this situation, and we are turning to you to help us make this possible for our children. To start this school, we will need $27,000 USD. This includes the desks and printed materials. The maintenance and teacher salary will still be covered with each sponsored child's monthly sponsorship donation.

We have already received one generous donation of $5,000, and we are hoping that many of you will commit to this need and make a difference.

Please consider donating. Even small sums will add up to a large difference. Also, please pass the word along. Advocate for this cause with us to help us take care of God's children.

Heavy Travels in the Months to Come

Church Planting

My Children

My kids started school here in Texas. I have two in High School and one in Middle school. As we watch the Lord lead us in our schedule, we continually have to depend on the Lord's direction on how to balance our family life with our ministry life. My wife and I lead a growing ministry in Ugand and maintain a national ministry in general, but we put priority in tailoring our lives to be healthy for our whole family.

The whole family is busy with back-to-school activities and definitely a lot of homework!

We are thankful for our children and their flexibility.

Please take a second to tell your children, if applicable, that you appreciate them. I will pray for all of the families out there that are seeking the Lord's direction in their hectic schedules as well.

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day reminds me of two things:

1. God is a worker!
2. On the Sabbath, God rested.

God is a worker, and when we work, we reflect his character and attributes. God worked for six days and rested on the seventh. That is how he made our bodies. We must rest to revive. This is why he created sleep, the Sabbath, and now the government to organize holidays such as this. God's rest is not going to be an annual event, but rather a daily experience as we rest in the Lord and also weekly as we take time off to celebrate life, family, and friends.

Growth of Book Industry in Uganda

The growth of the book industry in Uganda has been tremendous. People are not only buying and reading more than ever, they are also personally showing support for budding authors by turning out in record numbers to book signing events.

This is a great mark for Uganda because it shows the rise or literacy and education in our society. It is amazing to see hoe many professional you see that have been schooled in Uganda that go on to be engineers, medical doctors, etc. around the world. It shows our stronger educational system and people's hunger for knowledge.

Kids are Going Back to School

The orphan children in Uganda are going back to school for their second term. As many of you know, the school system in Uganda is different than it is here in the states. There, we have four terms and four breaks. Now, they are headed back to school for term number 2.

This means a break for moms during the day and work for children.

Anna Phillip's Girls Kick It! Program

I just read this article on the Washington Times website. It is about a young lady, Anna Phillips, who has greated a program in Uganda called "Girls Kick It!" that uses commitment to her favorite sport, soccer, as a life changing experience to help girls and women of Uganda turn their lives around. Ms. Phillips describes the theory behind this organization, "We have found when girls have a commitment at an early age, it is less likely they will marry young or get pregnant or contract HIV."

The girls and women in the program practice three to five days per week and attend life training classes that discuss pertinent issues like self-respect, prevention of AIDS, and importance of teamwork. In America, these traits are taken for granted. In Uganda, a woman with this knowledge is a rare gem. In Uganda, women without guidance and hope are often subject to young marriages, starvation, poverty, and more. Programs like Girls Kick It! strive to break this cycle by reinforcing positive and strong characteristics of the women of Uganda.

This Weekend in Orlando

This weekend I flew out to Orlando to attend two meetings. Things there went wonderfully! God was fully present, and I feel these meeting will mean great things for our ministry.

The weather there was so wonderful! Plus, the tropical plants and palm trees reminded me of Africa in some ways. It was like being home away from home.
